The island of Lobos was one of the first nature areas to be designated as ‘protected’ by the Parque Natural Las Dunas de Corralejo e Isla de Lobos Declaration in 1982. A law passed in 1994 reclassified Lobos and the Corralejo Dunes as separate nature parks: Parque Natural Dunas de Corralejo and Parque Natural Islote de Lobos. The European Community Commission has now included Lobos in the Spanish areas of special protection for birds.
Due to the new laws of regulation at Lobos Island with a maximum of 200 visitors between 10:00 and 14:00 and another 200 visitors between 14:00 and 18:00, it is now obligatory to apply for an authorization to visit the island at http://visitasisladelobos.com/
